Cross Wind Landing

Thumb-up to the courageous and excellent job by the Pilots on A320 of Lufthansa Airlines that they were able to land the aircraft safely on runway on the second attempt after encountering horrible weather in flight on approach to the airport; the cross wind. The phenomenon is regarded as extremely dangerous because for usual routine, pilots usually perform landing and take-off against wind direction and NOT cross over (perpendicular to aircraft's direction) My question; How did the control tower allows the aircraft to land even though they are well aware the presence of cross wind blowing at that time? Here are the shots of what were happening at that moment ...

Can you see how the pilots control the aircraft's lateral stability by adjusting the ailerons? The strong gust wind blew the aircraft out of track with the runway. However, with the "Go-Around" (GA) button, the Pilots can actually reject the landing (aka Rejected Landing) by increasing the engine throttle thus makes another take-off automatically just by pressing the button on the control column. A320 is an aircraft which is flying based on the "Fly By Wire" concept, hence it is much reliable and steady when encountering abnormal flight condition. No injury occurred during the incident. As for the aircraft, it had minor structural damage to its port wingtip and wing fairing. Amazingly, right?

How will you feel when you
are one of the passengers on board?
Hehe :)

The tower will only advice the pilots about the wind condition at the airfield, and it is up to the pilots to decide whether to land in the strong crosswind or not. Wind will rarely blew from the same direction as the runway, so it's quite normal to encounter crosswind during take-off or landing. But there's a limit how much crosswind the plane is designed to take, maybe 15kts?

For me, I'll probably freak out (stone/blank..) for 5 second if I were to pilot that plane.

Hey I enjoyed your blog about MAS LAE, although I don't know a lot of the technical stuff, but I look forward to read more. :)
